The second half of the piece is quite funny. Really would appreciate if the PM would force this as India's most effective "stimulus package". I mean, it is a well known fact that any other attempt at inequality reduction except direct payments is highly inefficient in the Indian machinery. So jokes apart, this is really a big stimulus from the political system, and the best part is that it also comes from those who are not elected.

It's very cool to write a "satire" on this subject. But a prominent businessman (and concerned Indian) like you can do better than this. There's nothing funny about this subject. How about sharing your real thoughts on how to rescue Indian democracy?

Radical, dude!

This "deflation" that's being bandied about - voter bribes must be encouraged so that more money is spent and therefore deflation is countered. Plus, let all the parties buy large quantities of rice and mangoes.

An innovative way of bribing voters is to give them a camera phone when they go voting; they should take a video of them clicking the party's button, and on providing that video proof they will get cash, rice, two cows, and the phone, free. [Buy Nokia shares]

Giri, I guess my weak attempt at satire didn't quite work. Yes almost every fact and figure in the post is exaggerated. I have now added a disclaimer at the end of the post.

That's totally insane, Most likely exaggerated. I've only heard, but never came across someone who actually received a gift.

You would go nuts if you read about Cash transfer scheme.
<a href="http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1236620" target="_blank">http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1236620</a>

You get paid only if you elect their party.

basab

thanks for this take. you say:

> In total, the voter bribes industry now accounts for an estimated 2 percent of GDP

the current issue of _outlook_ mentions one-tenth that figure:

"Election expenses likely to be about 0.2% of the GDP in 2009; not significant by itself, except that the entire sum is spent over just one month" (<a href="http://www.outlookindia.com/full.asp?fodname=20090406&fname=Black+Money+(F)&sid=1)" target="_blank">http://www.outlookindia.com/full.asp?fodname=2009...</a>

indeed the article goes on to declare:

"Unfortunately, the benefits of these bribes are too thinly spread out—not targeted at all, say economists—and ultimately, the sums are negligible compared with the size of the economy. They will not create any "stimulus" at all, avers Kumar. At Rs 10,000 crore, the electoral spending is about 0.2 per cent of the country's Rs 50 lakh crore GDP. "Hardly anything, it's basically a waste," he says."
